Ebook About
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “If you’re a fan like I am this is definitely the book for you.” —Pete Davidson, actor, producer, and cast member on Saturday Night Live “Danny’s incredible life story shows that even though we may fall down at some point in our lives, it’s what we do when we stand back up that really counts.” —Robert Rodriguez, creator of Spy Kids, Desperado, and Machete Discover the full, fascinating, and inspirational true story of Danny Trejo’s journey from crime, prison, addiction, and loss—it’s “enough to make you believe in the possibility of a Hollywood ending” (The New York Times Book Review). On screen, Danny Trejo the actor is a baddie who has been killed at least a hundred times. He’s been shot, stabbed, hanged, chopped up, squished by an elevator, and once, was even melted into a bloody goo. Off screen, he’s a hero beloved by recovery communities and obsessed fans alike. But the real Danny Trejo is much more complicated than the legend. Raised in an abusive home, Danny struggled with heroin addiction and stints in some of the country’s most notorious state prisons—including San Quentin and Folsom—from an early age, before starring in such modern classics as Heat, From Dusk till Dawn, and Machete. Now, in this funny, painful, and suspenseful memoir, Danny takes us through the incredible ups and downs of his life, including meeting one of the world’s most notorious serial killers in prison and working with legends like Charles Bronson and Robert De Niro. An honest, unflinching, and “inspirational study in the definition of character” (Kevin Smith, director and actor), Trejo reveals how he managed the horrors of prison, rebuilt himself after finding sobriety and spirituality in solitary confinement, and draws inspiration from the adrenaline-fueled robbing heists of his past for the film roles that made him a household name. He also shares the painful contradictions in his personal life. Although he speaks everywhere from prison yards to NPR about his past to inspire countless others on their own road to recovery and redemption, he struggles to help his children with their personal battles with addiction, and to build relationships that last. Redemptive and painful, poignant and real, Trejo is a portrait of a magnificent life and an unforgettable and exceptional journey.

Book Trejo: My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood Review :

What an insane, intense hard hitting beautiful ride. Danny has been my favorite actor since Blood In Blood Out. To be able to hear his story, glimpse his life is an absolute honor. Thank you for allowing us in and sharing the good, bad, ugly, tragic and beautiful life you have lived. So much respect for you as a human being. Beautifully written. Much love to you both.
If you watch TV and movies… you definitely know who Danny Trejo is… whether you know his name or not. Movies such as Machete… Heat… From Dusk Till Dawn… and classic TV series such as Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy… and countless others… if there is a bad ass Mexican criminal with a face only a Mother or a Drug Cartel could love… the odds are its Danny Trejo. This no-holds-barred… not warts and all… I’d say scars and all… memoir… is a non-flinching near unbelievable… true story… of a life that went from a deserved… self-created… hell-on-earth… to… an almost heavenly redemption… of a man… who made a promise to G-d… that if he helped him… he would dedicate himself to helping others. From an early (pre-teen) use and then as sure as night follows day… an addiction to drugs and alcohol… including heroin! Robberies… muggings… attempted murders… no concern for humanity… and incarceration in almost every known place with iron bars. Juvie… Tracy, YTS, Wayside, Chino, Vacaville, San Quentin, Folsom… a train ride through hell… with Trejo… the gleeful engineer who literally disabled the brakes… and stepped on the gas like a locomotive going undeterred down a steep hill. Marriages and vows meant nothing… nor did laws of society.Surprisingly to me… I also found out that Danny went to my Alma mater North Hollywood High School five years before me for a year. North Hollywood was the fifth school he went to in a year having been kicked out of four others for fighting. He kept his streak going by starting a near riot brawl that included him biting off part of the face of another student and then yielding a meat cleaver. Obviously that ended his North Hollywood High School career… and another place we had in common was the North Hollywood Police Station. From there the law breaking criminal career and streak of prison after prison… challenged Cal Ripken Junior’s consecutive games played streak. One other nostalgic “my old-home-town” touchstone… was when he and another scumbag addict… crashed a car into a tree at North Hollywood Park where I used to pitch in Babe Ruth League… besides being heavily under the influence of numerous substances… the trunk was full of weapons and drugs. Oh yea… one other hometown stop… before putting more prisons on his record… than McDonald’s has locations. He dropped off some of his ill-gotten money to a waitress who worked at a great North Hollywood burger restaurant that a young guy was taken to as a treat by his parents… at Magnolia and Laurel Canyon… called Johnny’s!Once in multiple big-houses… the stories and names… and degradation come even faster… if that’s possible. Everything Danny did in prison… was tied to a scheme… or a payoff. But one that included working a twelve-step program… started a sea change… that literally is still directing the core of Trejo’s life even today. It certainly has not been an immediate tranquil sea… or an afternoon on a placid lake. But the drugs stopped… and the heartfelt dedication to helping others in need was always there and flourishing.Even as marriages came and went… even as Hollywood fame sparkled… even while helping others… while not being able to successfully help his own children’s battles… his story is still radiating… after all the violence… the transformation that engulfed his soul and lit an eternal spiritual light that can be seen and felt by countless individuals.I read hundreds and hundreds of books… and for my lifetime I have always said… “NO MOVIE IS AS GOOD AS THE BOOK!”. For that reason alone… I hope this is never made into a movie… because there is no way on G-d’s Green Earth… that these stories would not be severely shortchanged under the constraints of the time limits of a movie. To not read this book… and instead try to grasp its power in a couple of hour movie… NOW THAT… WOULD SURELY BE A CRIME!
